What Is a Phenolic Tag?
Short answerA phenolic tag is a rigid, resin-based laminate plate used to identify electrical panels, equipment and valves. A laser engraves through the colored top layer to expose a contrasting core, so the text is cut in, not printed on. Phenolic is durable, heat-resistant, chemical-resistant and non-conductive. The most common style is white text on a black tag.

What are phenolic tags made of?
Phenolic tags are cut from phenolic laminate, a rigid, resin-based sheet built in layers. Engraving stock has a thin colored top layer over a core in a contrasting color. That two-tone build is the whole trick: engrave the top, and the core color becomes your text.
Phenolic earns its spot on panels and equipment because of what the material is:
- Durable. A stiff plate that holds its shape on panels, gear and equipment.
- Heat-resistant. Suited to electrical rooms and equipment spaces.
- Chemical-resistant. A practical choice where equipment gets wiped down.
- Non-conductive. One reason it's a go-to for labeling electrical equipment.

How are phenolic tags engraved?
A laser cuts through the colored top layer and exposes the core underneath. The letters are the core color showing through, so there's no ink sitting on the surface. Every tag is proofed first. You approve the layout before the laser touches the plate.
Black with white text is the most common combination. We also engrave red, white, yellow, blue and green tags with contrasting text.

Anywhere a label has to stay readable for the life of the equipment. Common jobs include:
- Panelboards, disconnects and MCCs with engraved phenolic panel tags
- Transformers and gear with engraved electrical nameplates
- Switchgear sections and breakers with switchgear and breaker ID labels
- Voltage marking and cautions with voltage and warning tags
- Plumbing, mechanical and process lines with engraved valve tags
- Machines and equipment with equipment nameplates

Phenolic vs. printed labels: what's the difference?
The big difference is how the text gets there. Phenolic tags are engraved. Printed labels carry ink on the surface.
| Engraved phenolic tag | Printed label | |
|---|---|---|
| How text is made | Laser-engraved through the top layer to a contrasting core | Ink printed on the surface |
| Body | Rigid plate | Usually a flexible film or sticker |
| Mounting | Adhesive, screw holes, or both | Usually adhesive |
| Typical use | Permanent ID on panels, gear, equipment and valves | Temporary or light-duty labeling |

Phenolic tag questions
Is phenolic the same as plastic?
Phenolic is a resin-based plastic laminate. It's rigid and built in layers, which is what lets a laser engrave through the top color to a contrasting core.
What color phenolic tag is most common?
White text on a black tag is the most common. We also make red, white, yellow, blue and green tags with contrasting text. Confirm color requirements for your job with the engineer of record.
Are phenolic tags conductive?
No. Phenolic is non-conductive, which is one reason it's used to label electrical equipment.
Can I order just one phenolic tag?
Yes. There's no minimum. One tag or a full job set gets the same free proof before we engrave.
How are phenolic tags mounted?
Choose adhesive backing, screw holes, or both. Adhesive suits clean, flat surfaces. Screw holes suit textured surfaces or specs that call for mechanical fastening.
