Phenolic Tag Sizes & Text Capacity Guide
Short answerPhenolic tags come in three standard sizes, 1″ × 3″, 1″ × 4″ and 2″ × 4″, plus custom sizes. A 1″ × 3″ tag suits a short, single-line ID. Step up to 1″ × 4″ or 2″ × 4″ when you need more characters or a second line, like voltage or source. Your free proof shows the fit.

What sizes do phenolic tags come in?
We stock three standard sizes and cut custom sizes to order. Use the table as a starting point. Line and character counts depend on letter height, so we confirm the fit on every proof.
| Size | Typical use | Lines | Max characters per line |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1" × 3" | Single-line panel IDs, disconnects, breakers, devices | {{verify}} | {{verify}} |
| 1" × 4" | Longer IDs, or a panel name plus voltage or source | {{verify}} | {{verify}} |
| 2" × 4" | Nameplates for panelboards, transformers, switchgear and equipment | {{verify}} | {{verify}} |
| Custom | Signs, room ID, larger nameplates, odd-size spaces | {{verify}} | {{verify}} |
How much text fits on a phenolic tag?
Text capacity comes down to three things: tag size, letter height and the number of lines. More characters on the same tag means smaller letters. Smaller letters are harder to read from across a room.
- Keep IDs short. Common abbreviations like PNL, XFMR and DISC save space.
- If your spec sets a minimum letter height, send it. We lay out to match. Letter heights per size: {{verify}}.
- Not sure it fits? Send the text. Your free proof shows the real layout before we engrave.

Panel and device IDs
A short, single-line ID like "LP-2A" or "DISC-3" usually fits a 1" × 3" tag. Start with engraved phenolic panel tags.
Nameplates with voltage and source
When the tag carries the panel name plus voltage or where it's fed from, step up to 1" × 4" or 2" × 4" for a second line. See engraved electrical nameplates.
Equipment and custom jobs
Machines, equipment and signs often need more room. Go 2" × 4" or custom. See equipment and machine nameplates or custom engraved signs.
Building to a spec? We match the identification schedule you send. Confirm size, color and text requirements with the engineer of record. For full job sets, see bulk phenolic tags for contractors.
Should I choose adhesive or screw mount?
- Adhesive back. Works on clean, flat enclosure doors and covers.
- Two screw holes. Better where the spec calls for mechanical fastening or the surface is textured.
- Adhesive + holes. Both, for a belt-and-suspenders install.
Larger tags on vertical or textured surfaces are a good fit for screw holes. When in doubt, check your spec.
What colors can I pick?
Black, red, white, yellow, blue and green, each engraved to a contrasting core. Black with white text is the most common. Confirm color requirements with the engineer of record. New to the material? Read what a phenolic tag is.
Tag size questions
What size phenolic tag do I need for a panel?
A 1″ × 3″ tag fits most single-line panel IDs. Choose 1″ × 4″ or 2″ × 4″ when you need two lines, such as the panel name plus voltage or source.
How many characters fit on a phenolic tag?
It depends on the tag size, letter height and number of lines. Character counts per size: {{verify}}. Send your text and we'll confirm the fit on your free proof.
Can you make custom sizes?
Yes. Send the dimensions or a sketch and we'll quote it. Your free proof shows the layout before we engrave.
Can I mix sizes in one order?
Yes. Mix sizes, colors and mounting in one order. There's no minimum.
Does my project spec set the tag size?
Some project specs set size, color or letter height. Send the spec section and we'll build to match it. Confirm requirements with the engineer of record.
